A very special evening took place at the residence of the Portuguese Ambassador, to London, HE Manuel Lobo Antunes, on Monday 2 December as the Anglo-Brazilian Society and The Anglo-Portuguese Society joined forces to celebrate Christmas and the year end in style. Long time Anglo-Brazilian Society member, Dr John Hemming, has a new book out, “People of the Rainforest. The Villas Boas Brothers, Explorers and Humanitarians of the Amazon”.

Dr Hemming is former Director of the Royal Geographical Society, and has himself explored extensively in Amazonia, been with many indigenous peoples (including four first contacts), and written books about them and the Incas. Both Brazil and Peru have awarded him high honours for his environmental work in their countries.

The three Villas Boas brothers were dashing young Brazilians who became their country’s most famous explorers, by leading a series of spectacular expeditions into unknown Amazon rain forests. The brothers encountered a series of admirable indigenous tribes and devoted the rest of their lives to helping these handsome people. The brothers made first contacts with five tribes, in dangerous and very tough expeditions.

The book is available in all good book stores or through the Amazon and Waterstones web sites.

The Gallery @ Oxo (Oxo Tower Wharf) in London was the host from 13 to 17 November for the exhibition and book launch of Sue and Patrick Cunningham’s “Spirit of the Amazon”. The exhibition was free and Sue and Patrick were there every day to enhance the experience. If you did not get to the exhibition, you can  buy the book on line from Amazon or Waterstones.
